Sustainable Festival-Going – Tips and Tricks!

Conscious Festival-Going in the Valley of Arts

The Valley of Arts is more than a festival: it is a living encounter between people and landscape, culture and community. However, this unique relationship can only be sustained in the long term if we all participate responsibly.

Sustainable festival-going is not about giving things up, but about making conscious choices – a series of small decisions that together can lead to real change.

Preparing for Sustainability

🚍 Route Planning – Travel Matters Too

Travel accounts for the largest share of a festival’s ecological footprint. You can already make a big difference through careful planning before you set off:

  • choose routes with fewer transfers
  • avoid overly tight connections to reduce detours caused by delays
  • if you’re traveling with others, coordinate in advance and share a vehicle

Well-planned travel is not only more environmentally friendly, but also ensures a calmer, more relaxed start to the festival.

🚆Travel – Lower Emissions Together

By choosing public transportation, you can significantly reduce per-capita CO₂ emissions. Trains and buses are not only more sustainable, they also give you the chance to tune into the festival atmosphere already on the way.

If you arrive by car, choose carpooling:

  • fewer cars, less noise, lower emissions – more conversation and more shared experiences.

⛺ Accommodation – Close to Nature

Camping and accommodations offered by local residents are closely connected to the spirit of the Valley.

These options:

  • require less energy and water
  • strengthen local communities
  • offer a more personal and authentic experience

Daily linen changes, towel washing, and air-conditioning associated with hotel operations place a significant burden on the environment.

If you do choose a hotel, one simple decision can help a lot: let them know you don’t need daily cleaning or towel replacement.

🎒 Packing – Less Stuff, Smaller Footprint

Conscious packing is a cornerstone of sustainable festival-going.

  • bring your reusable cup from previous years
  • use your own cutlery, water bottle, and food containers
  • choose biodegradable, natural-based personal care products
  • portion items in advance to avoid unnecessary packaging

Every reusable item is one less piece of waste produced.

🎟️ Digital Tickets – Paper-Free

Festival entry is fully digital.

A ticket stored on your phone is perfectly sufficient – no printing needed. This saves paper, ink, and energy.

Sustainable Presence During the Festival

📱 Staying Informed – Digitally Up to Date

The ValleyAPP always provides the latest program information, helping to avoid unnecessary printing.

If you do opt for a printed program booklet, use the same copy throughout – one festival, one booklet.

🐌 Getting Around in the Valley

Within the festival area, leave your car behind and use the free Snail Bus (Csigabusz).

These continuously operating services:

  • reduce traffic and noise
  • lower air pollution
  • make villages safer and more livable

🍽️ Food – What We Eat Matters

Food is one of the festival’s areas with the greatest environmental impact.

  • Buy from local producers and kitchens (Kékabroszos venues) – this reduces transport-related emissions and strengthens the local economy
  • Although vendors use biodegradable utensils, the most sustainable option is bringing your own tableware
  • Plant-based foods require significantly less water and energy to produce
  • If you order takeaway food in your own container, you reduce waste and add a bit of extra movement to your day

Sustainable Technology Use – Beyond the Festival

The digital world consumes resources too – energy, storage space, and materials.

  • Use energy-efficient devices
  • Repair devices instead of replacing them
  • Write short, to-the-point emails
  • Regularly delete old files and emails
  • Be mindful of video and streaming usage

Digital awareness is part of modern sustainability.

Valley of Arts – Sustainability Strategy

I. Introduction

The Foundation for Arts and Rural Development aims to contribute to the long-term development of rural areas through culture.

Over the past three decades, the Valley of Arts Festival has proven that a cultural event can simultaneously create economic, social, and environmental value.

II. The Three Pillars of Sustainability

🌱 Environmental Sustainability

The 2024 emissions assessment highlighted travel, material use, and food consumption as the areas with the greatest environmental impact.

Therefore, the strategy focuses on:

  • encouraging public transportation
  • minimizing air travel
  • prioritizing plant-based diets
  • waste reduction and recycling

💰 Economic Sustainability

Stable ticket revenue enables the festival to:

  • invest in green developments
  • build long-term partnerships
  • support local businesses
  • rely on short supply chains

🤝 Social Sustainability

The festival’s year-round presence ensures that its cultural impact is not limited to the festival period alone.

Community programs, education, intergenerational dialogue, and knowledge sharing all strengthen the region’s long-term resilience.

III. Diversity and Inclusion

The Valley of Arts is committed to creating an open, safe, and accessible environment for all participants.

Diversity is a value that enriches the community experience and strengthens social cohesion.

IV. Closing Remarks

The future of the Valley of Arts lies in moderation, connection, and shared responsibility.

Sustainability is not a destination, but an ongoing learning process in which every participant has a role.
